Black Betty & Desert Productions, triple j Radio, Video Hits and FasterLouder Proudly Present
LEGS 11
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
WEDNESDAY AUGUST 22ND 2007
"One of the most magical nights ever to be staged in this town. Please do it again next year; we need gigs like this." The Daily Telegraph, Oct 2006
In August 2006, Kristen Francis and Sahara Herald Shepherd, the women behind Black Betty and Desert Productions announced they would produce an event that, as women, they could relate to. Something that was sophisticated yet relaxed that showcased artists of diversity, and featured a good balance of men and women, not only onstage but in the audience as well. They also wanted to raise money and awareness by aligning this occasion with a worthwhile cause, Breast Cancer research. On a balmy spring Friday night last October the inaugural LEGS 11 was held in The Domain. Attracting thousands of music lovers who dined on fine wine and cheese while enjoying enchanting performances from some of Australia's finest musicians. It was a thoughtful, beautiful, and intimate evening.
Due to overwhelming demand, the ladies behind the legs are returning to deliver another truly unique evening of exceptional Australian music at the Domain on Friday, October 26th 2007. Stellar performances coupled with a delicious variety of indulgence from the world's most superb wine & cheeses, to a much needed end of the working week massage, LEGS 11 will delight all your senses by creating an experience under the stars you will not want to miss.
LEGS 11 is thrilled to announce MISSY HIGGINS appearing for the first time with the SYDNEY YOUTH ORCHESTRA, along with many special guests joining them on the Legs 11 stage. An award-winning singer-songwriter, Missy has enjoyed phenomenal success. Missy established herself with memorable songs like Scar and The Special Two off her debut album The Sound of White. Her new album, On a Clear Night was released in April this year and has already yielded the #1 single Steer and the top 10 hit Where I Stood. While retaining the hallmarks of her earlier work - irresistible melodies and 'arrow through the heart' lyrics delivered by a voice that clearly means it - there's a quiet strength to these new works signaling a more confident young woman. Being joined on stage with the SYO by an array of Australian music luminaries including PAUL KELLY amongst others, expect Missy's powerful lyrics and haunting melodies to create an unforgettable live performance that will leave the audience with plenty to think about. You will be entranced.
Between their charismatic performance and skilled storytelling THE WAIFS have become one of Australia's most loved and admired musical exports. For these bright stars the road looms large and long in THE WAIFS' inspirational tale of self-determined local and international success. In 2003, THE WAIFS released the studio triumph Up All Night including the warm and hazy smash single London Still. This album went on to sell over 200,000 copies (triple platinum) in Australia alone. Now this trio is back with the hotly anticipated album, Sun Dirt Water released September 1st through Jarrah Records. THE WAIFS will bring their earthy mix of country, folk and blues the LEGS 11 stage this October.
We're also overjoyed to welcome PAUL KELLY, one of the most significant singer/songwriters in Australian music history, to Legs 11. His narrative song writing style is infused with bittersweet emotions, ironic observations, and massive appeal. Issuing an enduring body of work with his own bands from the Dots to the Coloured Girls and then Paul Kelly and the Messengers and his solo outings, the prolific PAUL KELLY has an astounding back catalogue of classics far too great to mention here. With his new album Stolen Apples full of varied and fascinating material to offer, this special performance by this iconic troubadour is not to be missed.
Underscored by the fiery vocals and political lyrics of Natalie Paapaa, you can hear the afro-beat, reggae, world and Latin influences of BLUE KING BROWN who still manage to create a distinctly original sound. A refreshing take on roots music, uniquely Australian yet with an unquestionable international feel. BLUE KING BROWN released their debut album Stand Up, independently in October 2006. The album has received mass critical acclaim with the first single Come and Check Your Head getting high rotation on triple j and also making the Hottest 100 list for 2006. Stand Up was a Feature Album on triple j and also received a j Award Nomination 2006 – triple j’s Australian Album of the year. With a big future destined before them, LEGS 11 is proud to welcome BLUE KING BROWN.
Kicking off the night's entertainment LEGS 11 will host an array of incredible home grown talent performing under the guise NO MAN'S WOMAN (a tribute to women in voice). Getting in touch with their feminine sides will be BOB EVANS, END OF FASHION, LIOR, EXPATRIATE and DAN KELLY showcasing songs taken from the compilation album of the same name NO MAN'S WOMAN (a tribute to women in voice) out through Dew Process/UMA in October. This will be the live debut of the album featuring the boys doing their variations of songs made famous by iconic female artists such as PJ Harvey, Sinead O'Connor, Tori Amos, Fleetwod Mac and Madonna. Sure to be showcasing a few potential feel-good hits of the upcoming summer, the NO MAN'S WOMAN set is sure to be one of the highlights of the evening.
Tickets to this magnificent twilight event go on sale 9.00 am Friday August 31st. In purchasing a ticket, you are helping us raise significant funds for the National Breast Cancer Foundation so they can continue vital research and education needed to bring to an end this indiscriminate disease. LEGS 11 will close off the Breast Cancer Awareness Month of October and will be a positive way to celebrate hard fought for achievements and educate on the work that still needs to be done.
Thank you for your support and incredible feedback from last year's show:
"The inaugural Legs 11 Festival combined the best of everything - good food (cheese and wine; need I say more), pamper stations, local music talent and an opportunity to raise money towards breast cancer research. Let's hope the organizers can build on the success of this year's Legs11 and create an even better event next year - although this one will be hard to top." Drum Media
"The mood was so polite and genteel that people formed orderly queues to buy bottles of wine and plates of cheese. Many brought picnic rugs. It felt like a more grown-up version of Homebake. If this was a festival for grown-ups, maybe getting older isn't such a bad thing." Sydney Morning Herald "Thoughtful, beautiful, and intimate. This truly uniquely executed festival proved a great night and an ingenious way to raise money and awareness for a very worthy cause. Two legs up!" 3D World
"Overall, Legs 11 was a resounding triumph, hopefully the first in the line of many parties in the park" The Brag
"Legs 11 was a pleasant festival without a shirtless buffoon or a mosh pit in sight. If only more nights were like this" yourgigs.com.au
